Are the citizens entitled to their freedom in every sense of the word?
Greetings to all the esteemed citizens of Maldives- those living within the country and all over the globe, on the occasion of our 44th anniversary. Nearly four decades ago, on the 26th of July, 1965, the late former President Ibrahim Nasir (N.G.I.V) as head of state sought full independence for the nation. However, the question that is being asked nowadays is: are the citizens able to enjoy that independence to the fullest?

The 27th article of the Maldives Constitution stipulates that every citizen has the right to freedom of expression of thoughts in speech or in writing or by any other means as long as it does not contravene the tenets of Islam.
