Greetings to all the esteemed citizens of Maldives- those living within the country and all over the globe, on the occasion of our 44th anniversary. Nearly four decades ago, on the 26th of July, 1965, the late former President Ibrahim Nasir (N.G.I.V) as head of state sought full independence for the nation. However, the question that is being asked nowadays is: are the citizens able to enjoy that independence to the fullest?

The fourth President of the Maldives, Kenereege Mohamed Nasheed, assumed the post with the promise of taking the citizens to a term coined “other Maldives”, a Maldives that its citizens have never been able to fathom – let alone been able to make a wild guess. Thus in anticipation they waited. But alas, it was only a Maldives that only Mohamed Nasheed and his followers know.

Nasheed was sworn in as President on 11th November last year in a yellow aura filled atmosphere, a color which the people have thus far not given much significance to; and flush with complementary yellow colored graphics of temple flowers (scientific name: frangipani). Consequently, the people began to experience major changes to their social and individualistic freedom.

If anyone can behave any way they want; there is no respect for the Constitution: it appears that laws are meant to be broken! Say whatever comes to the tongue or write at their whim and fancy with absolutely no obligation for religion, enjoying same sex relations, drink and consume whatever, President Nasheed is certainly the hero who has brought that “independence” to the people of Maldives. Yes, the religion which had prevailed for over 800 years is now weakened by open blasphemy. This new wave of independence and democracy advocated with the generous aid of the western churches, when realized, MDP supporters, has embarked on seeking an “independence” that they had never had before!

The social fabric and national integrity tore to smithereens woefully destroying the state of independence that had prevailed and the unity and fraternity of a once peace loving people that has existed since the country’s independence on 26 July, 1965 until 11 November, 2008. Now the people have awoken to many a dream fully shattered, and in their awakened state, loud and clear you can hear them say solemnly: “We do NOT want the “other Maldives”!”

However, the present Government is working towards narrowing the path of freedom to its subjects; and to pursue a peculiar kind of freedom; one that only the Government likes to prevail which will curtail the freedom and enslaves the people. One look at the invitation card to the Independence Day celebrations says it all.

In sharp contrast to cards sent by previous Presidents which depict the serene beauty of the Maldives as detailed with strokes of famous artists, President Nasheed’s cards were flushed in yellow with a yellow temple flower on the back. The Government’s intention is, therefore, very clear – to promote the color of monks and to establish their party’s strength by way of party color and to further implant the symbol of the temple flower into the minds of the people; which leaves us with the question whether who do not support the ruling party have the right to their citizenship? Are they not Maldivians? Does every citizen have to be clad in a yellow robe holding a temple flower? Is this is the full freedom granted by our Constitution?

As the 44th year of independence dawns upon us, are the citizens entitled to their freedom in every sense of the word? Where is the peace and stability of the nation? Where is the joy and well-being?

Let us think deeply and roll up our sleeves to free our nation from the pathetic state of affairs that prevail our nation today.
